Like Dissolves Like

Like Dissolves Like:

"Dissolving" is when a substance is placed in another substance and it separates becoming one solution. This is like when you add solute to a solvent. Some, all, or none of the substance will dissolve. When it is dissolved, you can no longer see the original substance.

"Like dissolves like" means that solutes only dissolve solvents of the same material. Solvents that are polar only dissolve polar solutes as well as ionic substances, and nonpolar solvents only dissolve nonpolar solutes.
